Tourné sur une période de huit ans, Outcry and Whisper se présente comme un manifeste politique de la résistance de femmes dans la société chinoise et hongkongaise, qu’elles soient travailleuses, artistes, intellectuelles ou militantes. Face à la violence politique, au harcèlement sexuel, aux séparations familiales, au cyberharcèlement, aux procédés arbitraires des directions d’usines transnationales, les femmes racontent leur combat pour l’autonomie.
Shot over an eight-year period Outcry and Whisper presents itself as a political manifesto for the resistance of women, be they workers, artists, intellectuals or militants, in Chinese and Hong Kong society. Faced with political violence, sexual harassment, online bullying, long-term separation from family, arbitrary treatment by transnational factory management, women tell of their fight for autonomy.
WEN Hai a étudié à la Beijing Film Academy et travaille depuis 2001 comme réalisateur indépendant. Parmi ses films les plus connus figurent Floating Dust (2004), Dream Walking (2006), We (2008) et We the Workers (2017). WEN Hai est réalisateur, directeur de la photographie et monteur.
ZENG Jinyan est écrivaine, chercheuse et réalisatrice de documentaires. Elle est actuellement boursière post-doctorale à l’université d’Haïfa (Israël), après un doctorat à l’université de Hong Kong. Son livre Feminism and Genesis of the Citizen Intelligentsia in China a été publié en 2016 (City University of Hong Kong Press). Elle a produit et coréalisé le film Prisoners in Freedom City avec Hu Jia (2007), écrit le scénario du court métrage d’animation A Poem to Liu Xia (Trish McAdam, 2015) et produit le long métrage documentaire We the Workers (WEN Hai, 2017). ZENG Jinyan prépare actuellement un livre provisoirement intitulé Toward the Aesthetic of Activism: Chinese Citizen Intelligentsia on Indie Film, Art, Gender, and Politics.
Trish McAdam est une cinéaste et artiste visuelle irlandaise réputée. Parmi ses œuvres les plus connues, Snakes and Ladders (1997), Hoodwinked (1998), No Enemies Liu Xiaobo (2012) et Strangers of Kindness (2015). Depuis 2017, elle est membre de l’Académie Aosdana fondée par le Conseil des arts d’Irlande. Elle a été nommée cinéaste en focus du Irish Film Institute en 2019.
