Tora est un village naga proche de la frontière indo-birmane, négligé par les autorités à cause de sa longue histoire de résistance et ne bénéficiant d’aucune infrastructure de base. Soixante-dix ans après l’indépendance de l’Inde, lorsque les habitants de Tora apprennent que l’électricité est enfin en route, ils se méfient car ils ont trop souvent été déçus par le passé. Les puits sont creusés, les poteaux érigés, Khamrang, le patriarche, observe cela d’un œil sceptique. Son véritable rêve est la souveraineté de son peuple. Jasmine, en femme pragmatique, voit dans l’arrivée de l’électricité la possibilité d’acheter un réfrigérateur bien utile pour ses enfants. Les travaux progressent tant bien que mal, la vie oscille entre espoir et frustration. L’électricité arrivera-t-elle à Tora ? Si oui, apportera-t-elle la joie promise ?
Near the Indo-Myanmar border, far from the Indian mainland and mainstream consciousness, there is a village of the Naga community called Tora. Years of neglect coupled with a long history of insurgency have meant that basic civic amenities are conspicuous by their absence. Seventy years after Indian independence, the people of Tora hear that electricity is finally on its way. They are wary as they have been let down too often in the past. As pits are dug and poles erected, Khamrang, the grand old man of the village, watches with a skeptical eye. His real dream is to see his people attain sovereignty. Jasmine, a pragmatic woman, sees an opportunity in the coming of electricity and dreams of buying a refrigerator to support her children's education. As the installation work proceeds in a bizarre and haphazard way, life flickers between hope and frustration. Does electricity arrive in Tora? When it does, will it bring the promised joy ?
Anupama Srinivasan est une cinéaste, formatrice et curatrice basée à Delhi. Ancienne étudiante à Harvard et à l’Institut indien du cinéma et de la télévision de Pune, elle réalise depuis une vingtaine d’années des documentaires qui sont projetés dans les plus grands festivals. Parmi ses principales œuvres figurent On my Own (2002) et I Wonder… (2009). Le documentaire Nirnay, qu’elle a coréalisé, a été présenté en première et a remporté le Pramod Pati Most Innovative Film Award au International Film Festival de Melbourne.
Anirban Dutta est producteur de films, réalisateur, photographe et formateur basé à Delhi. Il a commencé sa carrière à la télévision en 1996, et a créé la société de cinéma Metamorphosis en 2003. Il a réalisé des courts métrages tels que Mud House (2010), Tales of Stamps (2016) et The Last Run (2019). Ses films ont été présentés dans les plus importants festivals de cinéma, notamment le New York Short Film Festival, le San Sebastian Human Rights Film Festival, le Mumbai International Film Festival.
